Cutting corners on workmanship or materials means you'll be replacing you fence more often and that will cost you more, much more.

To keep your fence looking new longer, as well as adding years to it's life, I recommend you seal the wood with either a clear or stain weather proof seal. You could also paint it if you prefer. Make sure you select a good quality seal or paint.
